Chemistry Prof. Mikael Backlund has been selected by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to participate in the 2024 U.S. and international Kavli Frontiers of Science symposia.
The Frontiers of Science symposium series provides a forum for the future leaders in U.S. science to share ideas across disciplines and to build contacts and networks as they advance in their careers. A committee of NAS members selects a group of the nation's brightest young scientists from industry, academia, and government to participate in the symposia that bring together scientists who are 45 or younger to engage in exceptional research in a variety of disciplines. Attendees of these symposia receive the designation of Kavli Fellow.
Backlund will participate in the 34th Annual Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposium in Irvine, California, on March 7-9, 2024.
The Backlund group is a physical chemistry lab doing both theoretical and experimental research. The central focus is to apply the machinery of quantum sensing and metrology to the measurement of molecules, biomolecules, and materials. One of the group's major research thrusts is understanding the fundamental limits of the estimation and detection of single fluorescent molecules set by quantum mechanics and the other major research effort leverages quantum defects in diamond called nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers as nanoscale magnetic resonance spectrometers.
