2023 St. Elmo Brady Postdoctoral Inclusive Excellence Symposium
Head shot of St. Elmo Brady

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois created the St. Elmo Brady Postdoctoral Inclusive Excellence Symposium (SEBPIES) series in 2020. The initiative provides a forum for a diverse group of postdocs interested in pursuing research faculty positions. This symposium is in honor of St. Elmo Brady, who in 1916 became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry in the United States when he graduated from the University of Illinois. The purpose of this award is recognizing that a commitment to diversity initiatives can play a significant role in furthering the inclusion of underrepresented groups in advanced STEM careers. Learn more about St. Elmo Brady.

A committee comprised of faculty and students in the department will select speakers for a visit on June 2, 2023. The symposium will be in-person and occurs over the period of a single day and will include the following events

  • breakfast with students
  • meetings with selected Illinois faculty, staff, students and postdocs
  • lunch with faculty
  • a department tour
  • a short research presentation
  • an optional career meeting with our career services staff
  • an optional review of your research proposal by faculty members
  • a reception for all participants

All travel expenses for selected participants will be covered. We look forward to your application! The deadline is Feb. 15, 2023. The application must include a CV or résumé, an abstract for your talk, and a letter of recommendation from an advisor or other close science mentor. Apply here
