The impact of technology in chemistry is undeniable.
Chemists’ use of technology helps manufacturers design more productive and efficient processes, allows pharmaceutical firms to characterize new compounds for drug discovery, and aids in conducting research that requires studying the fundamental properties of atoms, molecules, and chemical reactions.
Students majoring in computer science + chemistry have the opportunity to combine the study of computer science with training in chemistry to gain novel perspectives in interdisciplinary work that prepares them for a variety of careers. These specializations may include analysis of experimental imaging data to visualization of in vivo chemical reactions.
Students will be exposed to the tools of both disciplines — formal methods, analysis, computer programming, and empirical research — with the aim of acquiring the skills required by the field. CS + chemistry majors might develop computer models or simulate chemical and biochemical processes, perform statistical analysis of large data sets, or create visualizations of reaction pathways, molecular interactions, or other phenomena.

Computer Science + Chemistry Degree Requirements
The CS + Chemistry degree requires a minimum of 24 hours of coursework in chemistry, as follows.
12 hours of foundation courses in chemistry. 8 hours of these 12 hours must be in CHEM 102-105 or CHEM 202-204. 4 hours of these 12 hours must be in CHEM 232 or CHEM 236.
12 hours of advanced chemistry. These 12 hours must be at a 300- or 400-level and chosen in consultation with an advisor, who will consult with the Department of Chemistry as necessary to obtain approval. 4 hours of these 12 hours must be in CHEM 440 or CHEM 442.
The following courses may not be used to complete the advanced chemistry hours: CHEM 315, CHEM 397, CHEM 420, CHEM 445, CHEM 447, CHEM 492, CHEM 494, CHEM 496, CHEM 497 and CHEM 499; any course in another unit, such as any BIOC or MCB course.
