REACT Honors Requirements

The REACT Program can be completed for honors credit for CHEM 101,102,104, 202, 204, 232, 236, 332 and 436.

By participating in REACT, James Scholar students can receive honors credit in CHEM 101,102,104, 202, 204, 232, 236, 332, and 436. There is approximately 10 hours of outside work that is required for honors students to receive honors credit for the previously listed chemistry courses. The requirements for Spring 2024 are as follows:

Everyone:

  1. Attend an orientation meeting. Email us if you missed them!
  2. Complete a pre-visit Google form for your event assignment.
  3. Attend a training session (in-person) for your event assignment.
  4. Participate in your event.

Pick 2 Additional Activities:

  • Go on an extra visit (complete all associated activities)
  • Attend Reflection Night (complete survey before attending)
  • Attend a REACT social event
  • Prepare a list of three experiments (with common theme)
  • Attend study night
  • Help plan for a Teen Lounge event

 

After registering to volunteer with REACT, honors students will need to complete additional steps below to successfully receive honors credit in their respective college.

The following steps in the table below may need to be taken early in the semester

College

Instructions

Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS)
  1. Login at the online James Scholar Portfolio System.
  2. On your James Scholar plan, select REACT (Academic) under the 2-point options.
  3. Select the chemistry course you are currently enrolled in. Be sure you choose the correct section number.
  4. Click “Add Course”

Grainger School of Engineering
  1. Go to the Honors Credit Learning Agreement (HCLA) page.
  2. Open the HCLA form link and login.
  3. Select the chemistry course you are currently enrolled in.
  4. Indicate you are taking this course with REACT
  5. Write that you are participating in REACT with Dr. Bhagya Gunasekera and are teaching chemistry lesson plans to elementary through high school students.

Applied Health Sciences
  1. Go to the Honors Plan page.
  2. Click to submit an honors plan and login.
  3. Indicate that the option you are choosing is associated with a specific course – regular course with honors project (including volunteerings).
  4. If you are routed to an Honors Credit Learning Agreement (HCLA) form, be sure to select your correct chemistry course and section. If asked to include an instructor overviewing your honors experience, please write Dr. Bhagya Gunasekera (NetID: mmg).

Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES)
  1. Go to the ACES James Scholar page.
  2. Click on the Honors Credit Learning Agreement Web Portal.
  3. Enter the appropriate information for your chemistry course.
  4. Write that you are participating in REACT with Dr. Bhagya Gunasekera and are teaching chemistry lesson plans to elementary through middle school students.
  5. Enter Dr. Bhagya Gunasekera (NetID: mmg) for the Instructor NetID.

Division of General Studies (DGS)
  1. Go to the James Scholar Honors Page.
  2. Click on the Honors Credit Learning Agreement (HCLA) tab.
  3. Access the online form and enter the appropriate information for your chemistry course.
  4. Write that you are participating in REACT with Dr. Bhagya Gunasekera and are teaching chemistry lesson plans to elementary through middle school students.
  5. Enter Dr. Bhagya Gunasekera (NetID: mmg) for the Instructor NetID.

All honors students must explain the chemistry behind each experiment on the pre-visit Google forms. This must be thorough and understandable, as well as highlight the important features of each experiment. Student’s responses and completion of the above requirements will be assessed by the board on a pass/fail basis. Students will be sent periodic reminders about deadlines and remaining requirements throughout the semester. Remember, you must earn a B- or better in your chemistry course in order to fully earn honors credit.
